Integrating Basic and Clinical Biomedical Research

A defining characteristic of the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences is its strong emphasis on the integration of basic biomedical research and clinical medicine. While many graduate programs primarily focus on fundamental scientific research, our Institute promotes close collaboration between laboratory-based research and clinical practice, enabling students to bridge scientific discovery with real-world medical applications.

To support this educational philosophy, the Institute strategically recruits both basic science researchers and experienced clinician-scientists as full-time and adjunct faculty members. Each year, graduate students are mentored by attending physicians from Mackay Memorial Hospital, providing valuable opportunities to engage in clinically relevant research.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is further encouraged through seminar courses, where students from both basic science and clinical backgrounds are assigned to mixed groups. Together, they critically review the same scientific publication, exchange perspectives, and present their analyses as a team. This collaborative learning environment fosters interdisciplinary communication, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry.

The Institute also encourages joint supervision by faculty members from both basic and clinical disciplines. In addition, through collaborative research programs with Mackay Memorial Hospital, our faculty are given priority opportunities to participate in translational research initiatives that integrate basic science with clinical medicine.
